Abstract
Many EFL learners choose to be silent when asked to speak English. Speaking is one of the skills that EFL learners need to learn. Students have lack of self-confidence which causes they choose silence when speaking activity. The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a correlation between students' interest in learning English and their speaking confidence. The research method employed in this study is correlational research design. This study uses non-random sampling or purposive sampling, with 67 respondents. The instruments of this study is questionnaire and observation. The questionnaires were used to measure students’ interest in learning English, while the observation sheets were used to measure their speaking confidence. To analyze the data this study uses validity test and reliability to test the questionnaire and observation. Then this study uses a normality test to determine the normality of the data. In this study uses pearson product moment to determine the correlation between variables.Based on data analysis all instruments are valid and reliable, and the data distributed normal. In pearson product moment test the significant value (sig) is 0.005, it is less than 0.05. Thus, there is a correlation between the two variables. For the pearson product moment (r) shows 0.339 that the level of the correlation is in a low correlation. The correlation of this study is positive correlation, the meaning is the higher their interest in learning English the higher their confidence when speaking. The lower the students' interest in learning English, the lower their speaking confidence.
