Reading comprehension is one of the most critical factors in teaching English. Students must achieve their learning goals. For students to achieve their goals, teachers must have strategies for teaching reading comprehension, and the role of students is also crucial for reading comprehension that teachers teach in the classroom. From the result of observations and interviews, the researcher found two strategies when teaching reading to students in the second grade in SMP Negeri 4 Pare. The summary of the strategy of what the teacher did in reciprocal teaching, the teacher carries out a reciprocal teaching strategy to prepare the class to receive the material well. This strategy has four steps: predicting, question-generating, clarifying, and summarizing. The teacher carries out these four steps to teach students reading comprehension. The summary of the second strategy of what the teacher did in scaffolding. The teacher uses the scaffolding strategy by giving examples or stimulation at the beginning of each lesson, and this is the most effective alternative that the teacher can do to support students' understanding in learning to read because teachers provide more support for students who are less able to capture learning by being encouraged so that these students can follow in understanding the lesson. Teachers used these two strategies to develop students in the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Pare knowledge and skills in reading comprehension of English.
