Abstract

Reading is very important skills. Based on the results of preliminary observations, students at MTsN 5 Nganjuk have difficulty in reading ability, students lack in understand the text, retell, determine the main idea and supporting idea of a text. Therefore, researcher used the Student Team Achievement Divison (STAD) method to improve the reading ability of seventh grade students at MTsN 5 Nganjuk. The method is the simplest method in cooperative learning that can be used to improve students' skills. Therefore, STAD is appropriate to be used in improving the reading ability of seventh grade students at MTsN 5 Nganjuk. This study aims to improve students' reading ability at MTsN 5 Nganjuk by using the Student Team Achievement Divison (STAD) method. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of two cycles and 4 meetings in each cycle. The stages in each cycle were planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of this study were 29 students of class VII H MTsN 5 Nganjuk in the 2021/2022 academic year. The instruments used in this study were lesson plan, tests, observations and field notes. The data analyzed were the average value of student learning outcomes, the percentage of student success, and the results of observation sheets. In the pre-cycle, students had an average score of 57.30. The cycle one test results were 66.66 for the average score with a student success rate of 58%. The results of student observations sheet in the first cycle showed an increase. This improvement can be seen from students who are starting to be able to discuss and cooperate with their groupmates. Tthe result of student’s observation sheet in the first cycle were first meeting was 70%, the second and third meetings were 80% and the fourth meeting was 90% . Meanwhile, the class average score in the second cycle was 78.44 with 80% student completeness. The results of student observations sheet in the second cycle also improved. The improvement can be seen from students'cooperation and discussion with their groupmates, students could appreciate and listen to other people's opinions, students were more interested in the learning process, and students were more comfortable discussing learning materials with their groupmates. The result of student’s observation sheet in the second cycle were first and second meetings showed 80%, and the third and fourth meetings showed 90%. This means that the average score and student success criteria have been achieved. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the STAD method not only can improve students' ability at MTsN 5 Nganjuk, but also can improve students' sense of solidarity, enthusiasm, and interaction.
