Abstract
Vocabulary plays an important role in understanding all aspects of English. It also influences written communication through translation. In most cases, students have difficulties translating text, and one of the influencing factors is a deficiency of vocabulary mastery. Therefore, vocabulary correlates with translation. Several previous studies have stated that there is a correlation between vocabulary and translation. However, it has not yet provided evidence about whether there is still any correlation if it is studied by MAN students. This study aims to determine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability at MAN 3 Kediri, and it results in three correlations. This study used quantitative methods and a correlational design. The sample is made up of eleventh graders in MAN 3 Kediri, with total of 98 students. The data was collected using two kinds of tests: a vocabulary mastery test that contained 20 multiple-choice questions and a translation ability test that contained two texts: an English text that should be translated into Indonesian (text 1) and an Indonesian text that should be translated into English (text 2). In analyzing the data, SPSS version 25 and Spearman correlation were utilized because the data was not normally distributed. H0 is accepted if sig > α = 0,05. H0 is rejected if sig < α = 0,05 (Ha is accepted). And the correlation value is ranging between -1 < rho < 1. The mean score of the vocabulary test was 69,54. Meanwhile, the mean score of translation test text 1 was 77,28 and text 2 was 81,43. The coefficient value between vocabulary and text 1 was 0,267 with a sig. value of 0,008 (sig < α). It means that there is a very low positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate text 1. The coefficient value between vocabulary and text 2 was 0,317 with a sig. value of 0,001 (sig < α). It means that there is a low positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and ability in translating text 2. The coefficient value between ability in translating text 1 and ability in translating text 2 was 0,367 with a sig. value of 0,000 (sig < α). It means that there is a low positive correlation between students’ ability to translate text 1 and their ability to translate text 2. It can be concluded that MAN 3 Kediri students’ vocabulary mastery does not really affect their translation ability. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the next researcher identify certain aspects influencing EFL learners’ translating ability.
