Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in reading comprehension instruction, students' classroom responses to the use of CSR methods, and the strengths and weaknesses of CSR in reading comprehension instruction due to the lack of interest in reading activities among students in reading classes. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of this research were tenth grade students of SMK Nurul Islam Pongangan. The data was collected through observation, interview and documentation. The researcher observed the process of teaching reading comprehension using CSR in two sessions. The researcher conducted focused interviews with one teacher and six students. The researcher took documentation from the lesson plan of the learning process. Based on the results of the study, CSR helps students to improve their comprehension by comprehension through four comprehension strategies, which include previewing, click and clunk, get the gist and wrap up through cooperative work. In the process of using CSR, students showed positive attitudes and actively participated during the implementation of CSR. Futhermore, the analysis of the interviews with the the weaknesses of using CSR. The results showed that the majority of students did not agree with their role in CSR. The duration of learning was also a factor. Moreover, the learning process in groups makes the class noisy. In addition, the learning process in groups makes the class noisy, so the classroom situation is disturbed in the learning process.
