Abstract

SMAN 6 Kediri is one of standard schools in Kediri. Based on the observation, researcher found that most of students have weakness in reading skill especially the first graders. Researcher assumes that reading is a good thing, so based on the problem above the objective of the study is to know whether teaching reading using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) is effective or not to improve the student’s reading ability of the first grade in SMAN 6 Kediri in academic year 2012/2013. The design of study is quasy experimental research. This research has two variables, dependent and independent variable. Independent variable is teaching Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) (X), and the dependent variable is reading ability(Y). The population and sample of study is the first graders of SMAN 6 Kediri. There are two classes which divided as experimental group (X1) and control group (X3). Each class there is 35 students. The procedure of research, the researcher gives pre-test, post-test and treatment. To collect data, researcher uses test to be the instrument. And to analyze data uses ANCOVA by using SPPSS. The research finding shows that the students who were taught using CIRC technique get better score than those were taught without CIRC. It can be seen in pre-test the mean score of experimental group is 60, 57 and control group is 62, 71. In the post-test the mean score of experimental group is 70, 57 and control group is 66. It can be concluded that CIRC is effective to improve students reading ability. The progression score of experimental group is 10 and the progression of control group is 3, 29. The result of statistical computation using ANCOVA show that Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique is significant. In this research the significant value is about 0, 001 or less than 0, 05. So, it can be concluded that Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) is effective to improve the students reading ability of he first graders of SMAN 6 Kediri.
