Abstract
This thesis is about Discourse Markers Usage in the Undergraduate Theses of English Department Students of STAIN Kediri. The questions of the study are: (1) what discourse markers are typically used in research background of undergraduate theses of English Department Students? (2) Does the usage of discourse markers concord with the meaning of the sentences they connect? As English language learners, students of English Department of STAIN Kediri should be aware of the importance of discourse markers in their text production. Without discourse markers sentences did not become whole sentences. So, it means that discourse markers are really important as part of text to make sentences concord. In this study, the researcher takes 10 of undergraduate theses. The sources of the data are the research background of theses because research background is the basic to write down the thesis. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method and the researcher used Bruce Fraser’s theory to analyze the data. There are 4 types of discourse markers; those are Contrastive Markers, Elaborative Markers, Inferential Markers, and Temporal Markers. Then, the researcher analyzes the occurrences of discourse markers with the writer’s intention (the function of discourse markers). Finally, the researcher arranges the data systematically in accordance with the problem of the study. Based on the research, the researcher found four types of discourse markers that used in the research background. Those are Contrastive Markers, Elaborative Markers, Inferential Markers, and Temporal Markers. The result showed that the most type that occur are Inferential Markers, with 35 occurrences. It is from discourse markers so that.Then, the Contrastive Markers, the researcher found 15 occurrences with the discourse markers most occurrences in this type are but with the 7 occurrence. And then, Elaborative Markers, the writer found 14 occurrences with the most occurrences of discourse marker and. Finally, the type is Temporal Markers, the writer found 5 occurrences with the most occurrences of discourse markers meanwhile. All of 69 data on the use of discourse markers concord with the function in the sentences, it means that all of students in STAIN Kediri can use the discourse markers correctly.
