Abstract

Code switching is used to refer to the choice to alternate between two or more codes within the same sentence or conversation. The researcher is interested in knowing more about the code switching phenomenon occur in MAN Nganjuk. This research is conducted to know the types of code switching and the reasons of the teacher and students in the tenth grades of excellent class at MAN Nganjuk do code switching. This research is conducted in MAN Nganjuk. During the process of research, there are some methods used to gain the data like observation and interview. The research focused on the types of code switching and the reasons of the teacher and students in the tenth grades of excellent class at MAN Nganjuk do code switching. The classes that are chosen are X-BCA and X-BCS. The result of the research shows that there are five types of code switching according to Hoffman theory. The researcher found 103 data, the highest types is intra-sentential switching; 58 data, the second is inter-sentential switching there are 29 data, third position type is emblematic switching; 6 data, the fourth type found 5 data in establishing continuity with the previous speaker and the last type is involving a change of pronunciation; 5 data. The reasons’ of code switching because there are interjection, repetition used for clarification, and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. The teacher also have another reasons that she did switching because code switching is the effective way to make the students understand about the lesson and sometimes because spontaneusity switch her language during teaching and learning process. The students in the tenth grades of excellent class also has many reasons about it, there are because they think that in English there are many voabularies, so they cannot memorizes it. They are more comfortable with their utterance and they get difficulty in arranging English structure and lexicon.
