Abstract

One of the material sources in the English teaching and learning activities is textbook. For both teachers and students, using textbooks has several benefits. Therefore, this research evaluated two English textbooks for tenth grade of Senior High School entitled “Pathway to English” and “Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress”. This research aimed to explain the criteria of general attributes in these textbooks and to determine the quality of the English textbooks based on the criteria of a good English textbook proposed by Mukundan et al. (2011). It includes five aspects: the book in relation to syllabus and curriculum, methodology, sufficient for learners, physical and utilitarian attributes, and efficient outlay of supplementary materials. This research used descriptive qualitative research design by using content analysis. This research analyzed all chapters of the English textbooks for the tenth grade of Senior High School published by Penerbit Erlangga and the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudristek) of Indonesia. In collecting data, this research used checklist and questionnaire for students of tenth grade of Senior High School in Kediri as the instruments. The result showed that English textbook “Pathway to English” fulfilled the criteria of general attributes proposed by Mukundan et al. (2011). It was categorized “good” by achieving the sum point of 87% of the eleven sub-aspects. Meanwhile, English textbook “Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress” was categorized “Fair” by achieving the sum point 77% of the eleven sub-aspects. Based on the result of textbook 1 (87%) and textbook 2 (77%), it can be conclude that both textbooks still suitable.
