Abstract

Style-based complexity is a kid of complexity in the sentence which elaborated in nominal and clausal style complexity. Nominal style is a sentence which has a fewer clauses than the clausal style does. In this study the researcher uses the tweet of Gede Prama as her object of study, since the complexity probably happens in the tweets. The user has limitation to type the words that is maximally one hundred and forty characters, whereas it is apparently less adequate to tell something. Therefore, the complexity may mostly happen in the twitter as the user wants to tell something but they have the character limitation. The writer also analyzed the tweets based on the type of the sentence, since the type of the sentence has correlation with the style-based complexity. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative since the writer intended to describe a phenomena around social media especially on twitter which is limited to Gede Prama’s tweets on @Gede_Prama. By this design the expected result is to reveal the style-based complexity used in Gede Prama’s tweets based on M.A.K Halliday’s theory. The result of this study shows that Gede Prama broadcasted five hundred and thirty five (535) tweets from March, 20th up to April, 3rd 2014.Two hundred and twenty six (226) of them use nominal style and three hundred and nine (309) of them use clausal style. Besides, the researcher also found that every nominal style uses simple sentence and the clausal style uses compound, complex and compound-complex.
