Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing utterances in Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada using Schiffrin’s theory and divides the type of discourse markers. The objectives of the study are: (1) To know the types of discourse markers used in the novel of Lauren Weisberger’s novel entitled The Devil Wears Prada. (2) To know how the discourse markers are used in Lauren Weisberger’s novel entitled The Devil Wears Prada. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative research and the researcher used Schiffrin’s theory to analyze the data. There are six types of discourse markers; those are Marker of Information Management, Discourse Connective, Markers of Cause and Result, Marker of Temporal Adverb, Marker of Information and Participation. Finally, the researcher analyzes the function of discourse markers. This study, found that there are six types of discourse markers used in the novel. There are 29 utterances are includes into six discourse types. The Marker of Information Management has three markers. The Marker of Response has two markers. The Discourse Connectives has seven markers. The Markers of Cause and results have five markers. The Marker of Temporal Adverb has five markers, and the last Markers of information have six markers. And each of discourse marker type has its own function in discourse. Marker of information management has two functions, marker of response has three functions, discourse connective has three functions, marker of cause and result has two functions, marker of temporal adverb has three functions, markers of information management has two functions. So the novel uses all the types of discourse markers but not use all the function from discourse markers.
