Abstract

ABSTRACT Firdaus, Vivian Emylia. (2023). “An Analysis on Students’ Problems in Speaking English at Eleventh Grade of MAN 5 Kediri”. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisor: (I) Mohammad Muhyidin, M.Pd (II) Erna Nurkholida, M.Pd. Key Words: Speaking Problems, Causes of Speaking ProblemsThis present study attempts to analyze the speaking problems faced by the students in eleventh grade at MAN 5 Kediri and to know the causes of the problem. The student's problems can be divided into two parts linguistic and nonlinguistic. Linguistic problems are divided into three involve lack of vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and poor grammar. While non-linguistic problems are divided into four involving fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, and shynessThis study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected from observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The subject of the study is students of 11th grade at MAN 5 Kediri totaling 35 students. Researchers analyze the student's problem in speaking English based on Horwitz's theory. Based on the results of data analysis, the researcher finds that there are two kinds of problems there are linguistic and non-linguistic problems. Linguistic problems involve a lack of vocabulary, which has a score of 100%, and poor pronunciation. 94.2% and poor grammar 91.4%. Whereas non-linguistic problems involve fear of making a mistake, which had a score of 88.5%, lack of confidence at 82.6%, lack of motivation at 74.28%, and shyness at only 54.28%. From the percentage above, it is known that the most dominant problem faced by eleventh-grade MIPA 2 students is a lack of vocabulary where students know what they want to say, but don't know how to translate it into English, and in the end, they sometimes mix it with Indonesia and they are also often confused about using the right combination of vocabulary they need. Besides that, the researcher also found the causes of students' speaking problems, namely, rarely memorizing vocabulary, lack of knowledge, lack of practice, feeling afraid of being criticized, feeling afraid of being laughed at by other friends, low foreign language skills, and lack of interest in learning. So the teacher must consider appropriate teaching methods in speaking lessons to facilitate students and teachers in the teaching and learning process.
