Abstract

This research is about the effectiveness of word search puzzle towards students’ vocabulary mastery at MTsN 3 Kota Kediri. This is one of the puzzle games where students need to find hidden words listed in various directions: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, forward, and backward. Teaching vocabulary to junior high school students requires a different approach compared to teaching adults. By playing this puzzle, students can discover a new method of learning vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the use of word search puzzle is effective or not as media for teaching students' vocabulary mastery, especially in seventh grade students at MTsN 3 Kota Kediri. The design of this research is quasi-experimental. The population are the students of class VII in MTsN 3 Kota Kediri. The samples are two classes VII-C and VII-D. The experimental group is class VII-D that consists of 34 students. Meanwhile, the control group is class VII-C that consists of 34 students. The researcher uses tests as the instrument of the research. In analyzing data, the researcher uses mann whitney by SPSS Program 25.0 version. The result of this research shows that the data is not normally distributed. This is evidenced by Kolmogorov-Smirnov significant value is .043(Sig < a) for pre-test experimental, .048 (Sig < a) for pre-test control, .001 (Sig < a) for post-test experimental, and .019 (Sig < a) for post-test Control, which indicates that the significant value is lower than 0.05. Then, the result of Mann Whitney shows that the asymp. sig. (2-tailed) value of the class is .000 which is lower than 0.05. The null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted based on the result above. It means that the vocabulary mastery of the students taught using a word search puzzle is significant than those students who are taught by textbook. Based on the result, the researcher concludes that word search puzzle is more effective than using textbook in teaching vocabulary.
