Abstract

The role of writing skills is important for EFL (English as Foreign Language) students to support the learning process. EFL students can develop words into productive sentences. EFL students can do writing exercises by integrating their main ideas into writing to become coherent paragraphs. Based on the observations, the researcher found the EFL teachers' strategies in teaching descriptive related to the Spencer theories (2005). The objective of the research is to find out the EFL teachers' strategies in teaching writing descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. To find out the EFL teachers' strategies in teaching writing descriptive text. The subjects of this study are the three EFL teachers who teach in eleventh grade in MAN 1 Kota Kediri, SMA Negeri 6 Kediri, and SMA Negeri 1 Ngadiluwih. The researcher used three instruments namely, observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. The strategy applied by the three teachers who participated in this study showed that all teachers mostly had implemented Spencer's strategy. Although the three teachers in this study used Spencer's theory, they had different steps for each strategy. In this case, from the three teachers it can be seen that teachers have experience in English environment can be proven by duration of teaching. Teacher 1 who had 19 years of experience in teaching, Teacher 2 who had 23 years of experience in teaching, and Teacher 3 who had 27 years of experience in teaching. The implication of this research is the teachers can implement teaching strategies using Spencer's theory by adding and replacing strategy based on the needs of learning process.
