Advisor: (I) Dr. Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd. (II) Nur Afifi, M.App.Ling, Ph.D. Keywords: Politeness Strategy, EFL Class Interaction, Junior High School Politeness strategy plays an important role in social interaction including interaction in education. The employment of politeness strategies is highly recommended in the classroom to build relationships between teachers and students. This thesis aims to 1) find out the politeness strategies used by teachers in EFL classes; 2) find out the politeness strategies used by students in EFL classes. The method in this research is a qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative research type. The participants or respondents in this study were an English teacher and 38 students in VII-I grade at MTsN 8 Kediri. The data were collected through observation during five meetings in teaching and learning activities. The data that has been collected was reduced, displayed, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that 1) politeness strategies used by teachers in EFL classes were found to be 4 types. It was found 78 utterances used by the teacher, classified according to politeness strategies applied in EFL classes including a) There were 43 utterances categorized as positive politeness, b) 7 utterances as negative politeness, c) 23 utterances as bald on-record, and d) 5 utterances as an off-record strategies; 2) the politeness strategies used by students in the EFL class found 4 types with 46 utterances classified including a) 17 utterances as positive politeness, b) 18 utterances as negative politeness, c) 6 utterances as bald on-record, and d) 5 utterances as off-record.
