Abstract

ABSTRACT Wama, S. (2023). Pronunciation Problems of Thai Students in Learning English: A Case Study at IAIN Kediri Indonesia. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisor Dr. Toyyibah SS. M. Pd and Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd Keywords: segmental feature, pronunciation problems, Thai students, factors Affecting pronunciation problems English pronunciation is difficult for Thai students in learning English, because the student used mother tongue in communication mainly, therefore, causing confusion to pronunciation. The purpose of this research is to explain the pronunciation problems of Thai students in learning English education department of IAIN Kediri, in terms of consonant and vowel. The method of research is qualitative using case study research design. The participant of this research were 8 Thai students in learning English department. The data were collected through recording pronunciation test. The method of analyzing data were the techniques proposed by Sugiono, first stage, data analysis is a systematic process of locating and managing transcripts of interviews, field notes, and other materials that accommodate to enhance their own understanding and enable it to be discovered. The result of research showed that the pronunciation problems are in segmental features included the problems with consonant sound were /t/, /ŋ/, /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /ʧ/, /ʤ/ and the vowel sound [i:], [e], [ʊ], [ɜ:], [ə]. The student used similar consonant and vowel sound in representation of the sound. Some of them used similar Thai consonant sound. The factor causing pronunciation problems different of sound system between English and Thai sound and some factor including phonetic ability, native language, prior English pronunciation learning and motivation caused the students problem in phonetics learning as well.
