Abstract

Korean waves are spreading widely throughout the world. Based on this phenomenon, English has an important role in the spread of Korean waves. This support student learns English with the activities they do when following the growth of the Korean wave. The aim of this research was to find out students’ perceptions on the influence of Korean wave in their English vocabulary mastery. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method to describe the detail about students’ perceptions on the influence of Korean wave in their English vocabulary mastery. In this research, the researcher used the collected data and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative analysis. Research data obtained by using questionnaire, and interviews. The results of research question number one, students’ perceptions on the influence of Korean wave in their English vocabulary mastery. The participant agree that Korean wave can influence their English vocabulary, based on the result of the interview they argue that following Korean wave, it can help in increasing their English vocabulary, especially if they often use English subtitles, Using English when doing fangirl/fanboy activities can be alternative media in learning English, in addition to getting entertainment, they can also learn English indirectly. The results of research question number two, the influence of Korean wave on students English vocabulary mastery. The participant agree that Korean Wave can affect their English vocabulary when participating and gain more English vocabularies. Based on the result of the interview they argue that Korean waves can encourage their motivation to learn English. They can also find out new vocab and remember vocab. Motivated to learn English to be able to understand the content and interact with their idols and other fans. The results of research question number three, how does Korean wave influence students in their English vocabulary mastery. The participant agree that Korean Wave can affect their English vocabulary by actively using English when participating in fangirl/fanboy activities. Based on the result of the interview they argue that,interacting with their idols and other fans on social media they use English, read some articles related to K-Pop, watching K-Pop videos by using English language.
