Abstract

One of the skills that requires high proficiency in English is writing. Concentration is needed in order to produce good writing. In the process of writing in class, it is not uncommon for teachers to find students who have difficulty in expressing ideas. Various methods, strategies and media are needed to overcome the difficulties faced by students. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of Comic Strip as a medium for writing descriptive text. The researcher used quasi-experimental design as a research method. The population of this research was the Tenth Grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo in the academic year 2022/2023 which consist of 66 students. The subjects of this research are X IPA 1 as control class and X IPA 2 as experimental class with each class consisting of 33 students. The researcher applied Comic Strip medium in the experimental class and picture media in the control class. The researcher used a test to collect data on students' writing descriptive text namely of pre-test and post-test. The data of the test were calculated using ANCOVA in SPSS version 26. The researcher found a significant difference from the test results of the two classes. It can be seen from the average score of the pre-test experimental class is 66.88 and the average score of the pre-test control class is 64.55, while the average score of the post-test experimental class is 78.97 and the average score of the post-test control class is 73.64. The test of ANCOVA has shown significant value (p) 0.000 is lower than 0.05. It indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Moreover, this findings proved that Comic Strip is effective in teaching writing descriptive text, especially in the Tenth Grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo.
