Abstract

App. Ling., Ph.D. (II) Dewi Nur Suci, S.S, M.Pd Keywords: Students’ strategies; ideas; writing essay In argumentative writing, it is necessary to have the ability to develop ideas well, because ideas are the basis for expressing opinions. talking about ideas some students have difficulty developing their ideas. This happens because of many factors, including lack of vocabulary, and lack of composing sentences. This problem greatly affects the learning process. From this statement, the researcher analyzed the problems faced and the strategies used by students at SMK Pawiyatan Daha 1 Kediri. The purpose of this study was to find out the problems faced and the strategies used by students in developing their ideas in writing argumentative text at SMK Pawiyatan Daha 1 Kediri for the academic year 2021/2022. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research were eleventh-grade Accounting 2 which consists of 34 students. But in this case, this study used purposive sampling because the researcher took the data from 10 students who have the best, medium, and a low score in writing. The data of this research were collected by observation, documentation, and supported by interviews. In an analysis of data. First, researcher identified and check the data that was collected. After that, the researcher describes all the data. Then, to point out the trustworthiness of the data, this research used expert judgment and methodological triangulation. The result of this research showed that the problems faced by students were: grammatical problems, problem organization, content problems, and word choice. The strategies implemented by students were: free writing, mind mapping, and making a list. It can be concluded that students of Accounting 2 that took as the subjects had a problem are lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary, lack of skills in developing the idea, and lack of understanding of structure. From this study, the researcher hope can help students and teachers to develop their ideas in writing argumentative text.
