ABSTRACT Savitri, Winda Dwi. (2021). The Analysis of Online Assessment in Teaching and Learning English. Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisor: (I) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd. (II) Nurul Aini, M.Pd. Keywords: Online assessment, students’ perception, teaching and learning. The covid-19 pandemic shifted learning activities away from face-to-face to online learning. Meanwhile, even during pandemic, teachers still had to assess students’ outcomes weekly in teaching and learning. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher did further investigation to determine how teachers practiced online assessment and students’ perception of online assessment practiced by teacher. Hence, this research aims to investigate how teachers practice online assessment in teaching and learning English and identify students’ perception of online assessment in teaching and learning English. The research used a descriptive qualitative method to answer the purpose of this research. The subjects of this research were three teachers and students of X IPS 2 and 3 of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. The researcher obtained the data how teacher practiced online assessment through interview and document, and used questionnaire to know students’ perception of line assessment. To analyze the data, the researcher used Miles and Huberman theory. From the analysis, the researcher found teachers practiced some methods for online assessments in teaching and learning English included assignments, quizzes, feedbacks, performances, and tests, as well as applied online assessment tools such as Google form, Google classroom, WhatsApp and Google meet to assess students’ skills. The challenges faced by teachers were controlling students’ activity, students’ honesty, students’ assignment, online assessment, and internet connection. Meantime, students’ view of using online assessment were positive and negative. In positive perception, students perceived that online assessment was efficient, flexible, and effective, easy to get score, more being independent learner, and more focus. Otherwise, in negative perception, they perceived that they were difficult doing online assessment test quickly and in the form of open-ended questions, and cheating. However, despite positive and negative views about online assessment, the online assessment is an innovative way that surely good to be practiced by teachers in this pandemic situation.
