Abstract
Reading is an ability that every individual has in this world. It is useful for developing our minds to get knowledge, and understand the contents of a literature. It is appropriate for students who should be diligent readers and It would be ideal if learning a language was followed by proper and correct reading, especially understanding of strategies in learning reading. The purpose of this study is to explore strategies in learning reading that are applied by students and which strategies are most generally used by students in learning reading. The research uses qualitative descriptives. The population of this study is college students of English department at IAIN Kediri. There are 50 students, especially from three semesters until seven semesters. This research uses the theory of Oxford that have six strategies in learning reading such as memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. This study collects the data using a questionnaire. There are 30 statements for investigating students’ strategies in learning reading. The researcher uses (Strategies Inventory for Language Learning) SILL questionnaire Version 7.0 which is adapted to Oxford’s theory, for analyzing the questionnaire. The findings of this research show that the participant applied all the strategies of reading indicated by Oxford (1990), including memory strategies (3,3), cognitive strategies (3,8), compensation strategies (3,7), metacognition strategies (3,4), affective strategies (3,5), and social strategies (3,7). Thus, the average of the whole strategies gets (3,6) scores, which is a high levels of the strategies for learning reading. Then, the researcher investigated the most common strategy of reading used by students is cognitive strategies and they usually apply to this strategy most frequently in highlighting techniques that they tend to highlight the important words of their book when they read a literature, with a score of (3,8), which shows a high level of the strategies. The researcher expects that this research will be beneficial and efficient for students and other researchers who explore the strategies of learning reading.
