Abstract

Writing is one of the English skills which has a complexity. Writing skill becomes a difficult skill for the students because they do not know how to stimulate the brain by putting off the ideas straightly. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the students who are taught by using Instagram and the students who are not taught by using Instagram as the media in writing ability. This study used a quantitative method by using a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group was taught by using Instagram media. Otherwise, the control group was not taught by using Instagram. The population of this study is the tenth grade students of SMKN 1 NGASEM. The researcher chose X-TPM 1 as the control group which consist of 33 students and X-TPM 2 as the experimental group which consist of 34 students. The data was collected by conducting pre-test and post-test. The result of this study can be concluded from the mean score of pre-test and post-test in both classes, experimental and control class. The mean score of pre-test pointed that the experimental class was 54.05 and the control class was 57.42. The mean score of post-test pointed that the experimental class was 71.23 and the control class was 68.21. It can be concluded that the experimental class had the higher score than the control class. Moreover, the result of ANCOVA showed that (p) was 0.001 < α 0.05. Accordingly, the use of Instagram as the media in teaching writing recount text is effective for the tenth-grade students of SMKN 1 NGASEM.
