Abstract

Reading is the most important skill for students. Based on the preliminary interview with some students of SMPN 1 Plosoklaten, lots of teachers only explain the reading material without using media. Therefore, the researcher applied Herringbone Technique to improve students’ ability in reading. The research problem of this research was how can Herringbone Technique improve reading ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Plosoklaten?. The purpose of this research was to know how Herringbone Technique can improve reading ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Plosoklaten. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles. The researcher chose class 8B which consisted of 33 students as the research subject. The instruments of the research were reading tests, teacher’s and students’ observation sheets, and field note. The data collection of the research were test, observation, interview, and documentation. The data was analyzed by the average of students’ score, the percentage of the students’ success, and the results of the observation sheets. In pre-test, the mean score of reading test was 64,36% and the students’ success got 33,33%. In cycle 1, the mean score was 73,81% and the students’ success was 60,6%. The teacher’s and the students’ observation in cycle 1 in the first meeting got 66,67% and 61,53%, while in the second meeting got 91,67% and 76,92%. The mean score in cycle 2 was 84,54% and the students’ success was 87,87%. The teacher’s and the students’ observation in cycle 2 in the first meeting got 100% and 92,3%, while in the second meeting both of the teacher’s and the students’ observation get 100%. It meant that the criteria of minimum score and students’ success have been reached. Thus, it can be concluded that Herringbone Technique could improve students’ ability in reading recount text at eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Plosoklaten.
