Abstract
Reading is one of the important skills in English. In reading comprehension, students in Indonesia find it challenging and easily bored to read stories or materials. The teacher thinks about making students interested in reading comprehension, especially in narrative text material. One way to make students more interested in reading is by using scanning as a learning medium. This study investigates the effectiveness of using scanning in teaching narrative text comprehension to class X students of SMA Negeri 1 Grogol. This research design is quasi-experimental with quantitative research. The population is all students (198) in class X SMA Negeri 1 Grogol. The sample of this research is class X IPA 4, which consists of 33 students, and X IPA 5, which also consists of 33 students. This research instrument was tested (Pretest and Post-test). The format of the test is multiple choice about narrative text. To analyze the data, the researcher used Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with SPSS Program Version 21 for Windows. From the results of the ANCOVA assumption, there are indications that: (1) the requirements are that the data distribution is normal; (2) the variance between the experimental and control groups must be homogeneous; (3) there is no interaction between pre-test and post-test; and (4) the relationship between pre-test and post-test is linear. The end of the ANCOVA assumption shows that the significance value is 0.000 less than 0.05 (0.000˂0.05), meaning that there is sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis (H0) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that using scanning as a learning medium is effective in teaching reading comprehension for class X students at SMA Negeri 1 Grogol.
