Abstract

There have been a lot of studies on correlation between reading comprehension and translation ability. However, study about correlation between reading comprehension and translation ability is rare undertaking. Reading is important skill for students to develop because reading is an important component of both teaching and learning. It is clear why reading is important skill, the students who cannot read and comprehend a written language cannot be expected to be good in other content areas which will absolutely require reading ability. How well the students’ comprehension can be seen on how well their translation is. When the students do not read the text better, they will get difficulties in translating. In line with the purpose, this is a quantitative research using correlation design. All students in sixth semester who take translation class are the population of this study. While the sample consists of 48 students. The researcher used two kinds of test, reading test and translating test. The scores of those test was analyzed using SPSS. The result shows that rcount is larger than rtabel (0,370 > 0,284). It also a prove that the Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Furthermore, the result reveals that there is significant correlation between the reading comprehension and the translation ability in English Department of IAIN Kediri. It is categorized as low correlation. It means that reading comprehension is not really affect student's translation ability. Hence, the researcher suggests further researcher to find out some factors affecting student's translation skill.
