Abstract

Language is not only used as a communication tool but also a tool to convey certain interests, powers, and ideologies. Therefore, a critical discourse analysis research was conducted in which the study considered language as a social practice that focused on how social and political domination is reproduced in discourse. This study uses Teun Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis to analyze the structure of the text of President Joe Biden's speech published on the White House's official website. The research focuses on textual analysis to see the specific goals conveyed by the discourse makers, understand the rhetoric of the discourse makers in conveying certain messages, show and strengthen positions, and build certain images. Therefore, the aim of this research is to analyze the discourse issues that can be found at the thematic elements, schematic elements, and microstructure elements in President Joe Biden's speech on the Covid-19 Vaccination Program. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The transcript of President Joe Biden's speech becomes the main source of data for this research and was obtained from the United States White House Website. The research instrument is the researcher himself who is supported by supporting instruments such as notes, laptops, transcription, and a video of Joe Biden's speech. Several steps in the data analysis process included the process of focusing, selecting, classifying, analyzing, and drawing conclusions that refer to the theoretical framework of Teun Van Dijk to answer the problem. The results of data analysis shows that the topic of the speech focuses on the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic through the global vaccination program. On the superstructure element, President Joe Biden organizes his opinion into a three-part scheme, namely opening, body, and closing. In the microstructural elements, several local meanings are found, such as semantics, syntax, stylistics, and rhetoric. Some of these local meanings support the main message of the discourse where President Joe Biden is trying to create a positive impression and show the strong influence and position of the United States on the world especially at that time through the donation of large vaccines that should be appreciated and respected.
