Abstract
AFIFAH, MILA NUR. 2022. Discovery Learning on Students’ Reading Ability at the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Pawyatan Daha 1 Kediri. Thesis. Department of English Language Education. Faculty of Tarbiyah. IAIN Kediri. Advisors: (1) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd., M.H and (2) Ria Fakhrurriana, M.Pd Keywords: Discovery learning, reading ability, teaching learning process Reading is a window of the world because from reading everyone knows the new information. When teaching reading, teacher need to consider appropriate teaching and learning method to be applied in the class. One of the methods to teach reading is discovery learning method. Discovery learning is a method that makes the students to think, ask, and observe the materials by themselves. This study aims to know the implementation of discovery learning on students’ reading ability at the tenth grade students, the strengths, and the weaknesses of discovery learning method at SMK Pawyatan Daha 1 Kediri. This study used qualitative research design and the data was analyzed descriptively. This research was conducted at the tenth grade students of SMK Pawyatan Daha 1 Kediri that consists of 38 students. The data was collected by observation, interview, and documentation. The researcher was analyzed the data used the techniques of data reduction, data display, and verification. The results of this study reveals that the teacher implements discovery learning in teaching reading using appropriate procedures of discovery learning; they are: (1) stimulation (2) problem statement (3) data collection (4) data processing (5) verification (6) generalization. The strengths of discovery learning are the students and the teacher always do good communication while in teaching and learning process, the students are more active in the class, and the students can build the idea about related topic by themselves. The weaknesses of discovery learning are the students have less motivation to understand the material, the students who have low skills in this method become a problem for themselves, and the teacher feels difficulties to implement this method because a lot of students are in one class. From the results above, the researcher concludes that discovery learning method is useful and relevant for teaching and learning process in the class although there are some problems faced by the teacher and the students.
