Department of English Language education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Kediri. Advisors: Ria Fakrurriana, S. Pd.i, M. Pd., and Muhyidin, M. Pd. Keywords: Speaking Skills, Active Learning Strategy, Improving The ability to speak a language is essential to language learning success. However, During speaking classes, teachers frequently find it difficult to engage their students in speaking activities. The researcher observed that most students at MAN 5 KANDAT, East Java, were having difficulty speaking. It did not mean that their ideas are lacking, but it is related to their motivation to speak up in class. Also, students found learning English uninteresting because the method or strategy used was not appealing to them. So, the study was aimed to improve students’ speaking skill by using Active Learning strategy at X MIA 1 Grade of MAN 5 Kandat. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis (1981) model of CAR that consist of planning stage, action stage, observation stage, and reflection stage. The subject of the research is one class of Class X MIA1 in the academic year 2018-2019. The were 31 students as the subject of the research. A pretest and a posttest of speaking were used as the instruments of the research. For the criteria of success, the students should get minimum score 75. The finding revealed that the action research was successfully conducted through four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In the pre-cycle there were 10 students passed the criteria of success (75). In the after treatment test, it was revealed that there were 24 students or 77.42% of the total students surpassed the criteria of success. The conclusion of using action learning strategy was effective to improve students’ speaking performance.
