Abstract

This study aims to An Analysis of Reading Comprehension Question Levels, Reading is one of the main significant elements to develop English language ability. The goal of reading is to comprehend, reading without comprehension the text is useless. Nowadays English textbooks support the teachers to provide materials because teachers are demanded to provide various material creatively, that way Textbook is the equipment of teaching and learning process and the purpose of the textbook is to help the students to achieve the understanding of their material especially in reading comprehension. This study uses a content analysis research design to analyze reading comprehension questions based on Barrett's Taxonomy. Content Analysis research design is a part of the qualitative research approach. this research serves as a tool to understand certain characteristics of the material, where this research has can be done with any written material, from documents to interview transcriptions, from media products to personal interviews While the purpose of content analysis is to describe the relative frequency and importance of a particular topic and evaluate bias, prejudice, or propaganda in printed materials. The document employed for this research is an English textbook used by a 10th-grade student published by Kemendikbud RI 2017. This research used purposive sampling techniques to determine the sample since the sample of this research was selected purposefully only for reading comprehension questions contained in each chapter, then this research based on Barrett's Taxonomy. Based on the findings, it was found that there were five types of reading comprehension questions. The writer found out the types of reading comprehension questions based on Barrette’s taxonomy divided into 195 questions such as Literal Comprehension 116 (59%), Reorganisation 23 (12%), Inferential 15 (8%), Evaluation 18 (9%), and Appreciation 23 (12%). Of the types of comprehension, Literal Comprehension is the most dominant level of comprehension. So this research shows that therefore, using the English textbook “Bahasa Inggris Kelas X” for seven grades students can be used as the material for reading comprehension questions skills. However, there are still some questions that need to be developed again.
