Abstract

In learning narrative text, understanding the idea or message of the text is essential. When it comes to the translation activity, the usage of Google Translate offers the quick translation result, which gives general information about the text although the diction is not really good. It is not prohibited, but it is more appropriate if teachers' perception is given when as an educator, they hold responsibility on students' comprehensive understanding. This research is aimed to know the teachers' perception toward Google Translate which is used by students in learning narrative text. The subjects of this research are the English teachers of SMKN 1 Ngasem. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected by interview as the main data. There are 5 questions, which are divided into 4 open-ended questions and 1 close-ended question. The findings show that Google Translate is used by most of the students. 75% teachers allow the use of it, because it eases the students to get the general idea of the narrative text. It is caused by the fact if students still have lack of vocabularies and as long the students follow the rules when they access. But, it does not really recommended by 25% teacher, because the translation still is not accurate in dictions. It is not appropriate to the context which does not make sense. By knowing the result, this research is expected to be one of the literatures which contribute to the view of the discourse analysis field.
