Abstract
Writing recount text is one of the abilities to be mastered by the eighth grade students based on KD (Basic Competence) 3.11 and 4.11 of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (Permendikbud) No. 37 of 2018. However, based on the previous studies, students had low ability in writing recount text. They also faced some difficulties in writing the text, especially in writing aspects. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the quality of recount text written by the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 5 Nganjuk as well as the difficulties they faced in writing the text. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. This study involved 29 students of class VIII-I of MTs Negeri 5 Nganjuk in the academic year 2020/2021. Moreover, the data were collected through writing test and questionnaire. The students were asked to write a personal recount text with the topic “My Unforgetful Experience”. They were also asked to fill the questionnaire, which consisted of 20 close-ended questions and two open-ended questions. The recount text was assessed using the scoring rubric adapted from Jacobs et al. (1981), which consists of five writing aspects, which are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Furthermore, the students’ difficulties in writing recount text were seen from the test’s result. The difficulties were listed and counted in percentage to see the most frequent difficulty the students faced in writing recount text. The questionnaire’s response was used to cross-check the test’s result. The finding reveals that the mean score of the students’ recount text was 66.17. Based on the score classification adapted from Depdikbud (2009), this score is classified as “Average”. An “Average” recount text was mostly relevant with the assigned topic and had few errors in chronological sequencing. It demonstrated occasional errors in vocabulary, sentence pattern, past tense, and mechanics. From the test, it was found out that the most to the least frequent difficulties found in the 29 recount texts were respectively language use (27.71%), content (21.69%), vocabulary (21.69%), mechanics (16.87%), and organization (12.05%). Furthermore, the students reported that they had difficulties in arranging words into correct sentences and using past tense. This is due to students had difficulties in using English language since its language features are different from Indonesian language features. Therefore, it can be concluded that the quality of recount text written by the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 5 Nganjuk was classified as “Average”. Moreover, the most frequent difficulty faced by the students in writing recount text was language use, which involved sentence pattern and past tense.
