Abstract

This research investigated the correlation between vocabulary score and translation skill, the first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri and focus on their translation skill activities and vocabulary mastery. This research generally answered three questions: 1) How is the students’ vocabulary score at first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri? 2) How is the students’ translation skill score score at first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri?, 3) Is there any correlation between vocabulary score and translation skill at first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri?. The objectives of this research were: 1) to find out the students’ vocabulary score, 2) to describe the students’ translation skill, 3) to find out whether there is any correlation between the vocabulary score and translation skill at first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. The subjects in this research were the first grade students of SMAN 4 Kediri total of 376 students and 57 students for the sample. The analysis method used in this study was quantitative. The data was collected using two kind of test, the multiple choice type for the vocabulary mastery and English text for the translation skill applied on Google form and shared by Google form link through WhatsApp group. The finding is obtained in the Pearson Product Moments formula, if the significance value (sig.) is less than 0.05 then there is a relationship between the two variables, that Ha calculated with a significance value of 5% or rtable (0.266) is smaller than rcount. So Ha accepted. From the data, it can be seen that the significance value indicates 0, 838 so it can be conclude that there is any correlation between vocabulary score and translation skill. Based on this research, it was concluded that a good ability in translating text students should have mastery of vocabulary. It means that there was correlation between students’ vocabulary score and their translation ability at the first grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri academic year 2020/2021.
