Abstract

Social media are very popular among young generations and it influenced them more than everything. The existence of social media helped people to easier their activities. Even though social media is not directly created for educational purpose. It has drawn attention from educators, especially for todays with the existence of COVID-19 pandemic for support the learning process. Students can utilize social media for improving their speaking by the contents provides there or express their speaking by making content on social media. This study is purposed to know students‟ behavior in using social media and students' perception and belief on the use of social media towards their speaking skill. Since students are the center of the learning proccess, their perception and belief of the learning process is usefull to knowing by the teachers as a way to create the best teaching activities that are close to their students. The writer uses descriptive qualitative design to gain the research. The writer collects the data from questionnaire that shared to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 3 Kediri, analyze the validity and reliability data results using SPSS 21 and describe the findings descriptively. The writer found that student‟s spent their time on social media about 4-3 hours in a day, they use social media for various purposes, such as; communication, educational purpose, entertainment and lifestyle. The most used social media by students are YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp. The writer also found that students‟ have positive perception and belief on the use of social media towards their speaking skill. They belief that social media is an appropriate supporting platform outside the school for improving their speaking skill.
