Abstract
Figurative language or known as figure of speech is a language style that used in literature artworks such us on poetries, books, poems, even on songs. Figurative language contains hidden meaning in it, especially on song lyrics. By analyzing figurative language, people be able known what is the actual meaning from explicit meaning contained on song lyrics. This research aims to find out the kinds of figurative language are used on song lyrics entitled “Four” as One Direction’s music album. The object of the research is song lyrics especially on “Four” music album contained of 12 songs. The research method used in this research by identifying and classifying through the song lyrics, then analyzing it into the kinds of figurative language by using Perrine’s theory as a guidance. The final result of this research is there are 10 kinds of figurative language used through song lyrics on “Four” music album by One Direction. They are simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, paradox, hyperbole, and irony. Moreover, the most used of figurative language on song lyrics is symbol. There are 9 songs used symbol as figurative language through it.
