Abstract

Study of politeness is very important for English Learner, because successful communication is possible when they used the right way of communication that seems in how their face and words in keeping the interlocutor face’s want, especially when they make a mistake, and how is their face and word in the way of apologizing. In this case the way male and female communicate is often different, because their natural character. The aim of this study is to investigate the apology strategies used by male and female students and the act of apologizing used by male and female students in order to find out whether there are similarities and differences between them, and what is the most frequent apology strategies used by them. Population of this research is 200 students of MTI’s (Media Teaching of Islam) member in Gading Mangu Boarding School at Perak, Jombang. While the sample of this research is 60 students of MTI’s (Media Teaching of Islam) that consist of 30 male students and 30 female students. Sampling technique used in this research is proportional random sampling. The research conducted by distributing the DCT (Discourse Completion Test) which consist of 10 conditions that may respondents face in their daily communication and need to use apology strategies in that conditions. Result of this research revealed that the apology strategies used by the respondents are IFID, EXPL, RESP, REPR, FORB and No Apology. The result also shows that the use of apology strategies between male and female is almost the same because they used five apology strategies and in the same rank, except in the use of ‘no apology’ and male used ‘no apology’ more than female. And the most frequent apology strategies used by the male and female respondents is EXPL and REPR, while the least apology strategies used by them is RESP.
