Abstract

Writing activity is composing, developing ideas into some words. Writing English as a foreign language is a challenging and complex task for non-native learners. Thus, many grammatical errors found in students’ writing. Grammatical error connects to learners’ gap between their knowledge that they do not know what the correct one is. Learners do not realize their erroneous. Thus, this study examines students’ grammatical errors in recount text writing. This study finds out the numbers of the students’ writing’s grammatical errors and the most frequently�occurred errors. The data of this study was collected from 62 students’ writings of class X (tenth grade) of SMA Negeri 1 Kediri in academic year 2018/2019. Then, the data was analyzed by using Linguistic Error Taxonomy by Politzer and Ramirez (1973). This error classification has two main error categories, namely Morphology category and Syntax category, and both categories have error components. Tables of frequency were formed to identify and calculate the types of grammatical errors. Then, an interview was conducted to find out the causes of students’ error and their perception on their English writing. In this study, the researcher finds totally 412 errors produced in students’ writings. Those errors include 78 errors in morphology category or 18.93% of 100% the whole grammatical errors, or it can be named as morphological error; and 354 errors in syntax category or 81.07% of 100% the whole grammatical errors, or it can be named as syntactical error. The most frequently-occurred grammatical error found in syntax category, especially in Disagreement of subject and tenses which consists of 194 errors or 47.09% of the whole grammatical errors. The next most frequently-occurred grammar error found in morphology category in Omission of “-ed” with 71 errors or 17.23%. Then, the third one is Attachment of the past marker to the dependent verb from syntax area which consists of 31 errors or 7.52%.
