Abstract
Writing is one of the productive skills in English. It is more complicated than the other skills because need hard thinking in producing words in written form. Therefore, most of students have problem to start their writing, they are difficult to generate their ideas, and they are confused to develop paragraph because they have no inspiration. There are various techniques which can be applied in writing to solve the students’ problems. One of the techniques is Clustering Technique. Clustering Technique is the way to generate ideas before the students start to write. It is like diagramming or mapping. This study is conducted to find out whether the students who are taught by using clustering technique get better achievement in writing descriptive text than those who are not taught by using clusteringtechnique.The researcher used Quasiexperimental design as the research design. The subject of this research is 55 students at the seventh grade students of MTs Negeri Perak Jombang in the academic year of 2016/2017. The subject of this study is divided into two classes, class VII-A as experimental group, and class VII-D as control group. Class VII-A taught by using clustering technique whereas class VII-D taught by using conventional method. The researcher used test as instrument of this research. The data was analyzed by using ANCOVA in SPSS 16.0 version for windows. In the results of pre-test, the mean scores of experimental group was53.57, and the control group was 51.39. In the post-test, the mean scores of experimental group was56.92, and the control group was 36.10. The result of the ANCOVA computation showed that the significant value (P) was 0.000 < 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the students who are taught by using clustering technique get better achievement in writing skill. Therefore, clustering technique is effective in teaching writing descriptive text at MTs Negeri Perak Jombang.
