Abstract
Writing is one of the skills in any languages which we can share our thought, opinion, story, and many more. The idea that expressed through the writing should be clear and brief. In writing process, we need to engage the knowledge on grammar, lexicon, syntax, morphology and so on. However, in writing, the learners tend to do the errors such as in grammatical area although they have been studying it. This study aimed to find what types of errors and the most as well as the least frequency of errors found in English Outing Student’s Report of STAIN Kediri in academic year 2016/2017. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. Then, the subjects of this study are four (4) English Outing students’ reports made by fifth semester students of English Department of STAIN Kediri. The researcher did several steps to collect the data; they are collecting the data of English Outing Student Report from the collection of SLC (Student Learning Center), reading the students’ writing thoroughly and marking the data that contain the errors. The researcher identified, classified, and analyzed the data based on the types of error from Dulay’s theory (the surface strategy taxonomy). The finding of this study shows that there are four types of error in students’ writing. They are omission (33 errors = 32.67%), addition (21 errors = 20.79%), misformation (41 errors = 40.59%), and misordering (6 errors = 5.94%). The researcher found the total number of whole error is 101. The results reveals that the most frequency of error is misformation error with 41 out of 101 of whole errors (40.59%). On the other hand, the least frequency of error is misordering error with total number of error is 6 (5.94%). The researcher makes conclusion that the students still get difficulty in using the right tense in composing their writing. The students seem to focus on their story rather than use the right structures.
