Abstract
This study aimed at improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension through the use of Reciprocal Teaching Method. This classroom based action research was conducted at class eleventh of SMAN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri in academic year 2015/2016. The subject of the study were 29 students consisting of 14 males and 15 females. This study was conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of two sessions, which were each session for treatment and in the end of the cycle for test. Each cycle involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments in this study were interview, test, observation checklist, and diary note. This study was carried out based on preliminary observation, which indicated that the students had problem in reading comprehension. This result of the study showed that the students’ achievement in reading comprehension improved through the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Method. It was shown by the students’ mean score in the tests. The students mean score in the pre – test was 60.58. Than it improved to 69.62 in cycle I. It was 17 (58.62%) students who are able to achieve the passing grade score ≥75. After that, it improved to 73.13 in cycle II. It was 20 (70.35%) students who are able to achieve the passing grade score ≥75. The students’ achievement further improved after the researcher modified the teaching and learning activities in cycle III. As a result, the students’ mean score improved to 77.48 and it was 24 (82.75%) students who are able to achieve the passing grade score. The result of the observation checklist after using Reciprocal Teaching Method showed that the students more active in the learning process before using it. Based on the result of the study, it could be concluded that the application of Reciprocal Teaching Method could improve the reading comprehension of the students.
