Abstract

Transitivity theory is the grammatical system proposed by M.A.K Halliday in interpreting and uncovering the main linguistic features of a certain literary discourse. Therefore, transitivity analysis is used to investigate the texts of narrative texts that are presented in English textbooks for Junior High School. Because of the investigation can help to unveil the values behind the stories. Therefore, both students and teachers can be aware of equality and inequality issues in textbooks in order to make an equality perspective. This awareness can help the students and especially teachers to make good decisions in using textbooks. The objectives of this study are to find out the process types of male and female characters in narrative texts in the textbooks and whether the processes reflect the dominance of gender representation. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods under transitivity analysis method. The instrument of this study is the researcher himself. In this study, the researcher acts as the planner, data collector, analyst, and finally reporter of the research finding. In addition, this study also uses a table of the data sheet that consisted of the note of the clauses, process types, and the frequencies of occurrences of sentences produced by male and female characters in the narrative texts in the EFL textbooks. The form of data sheet is adopted and modified from transitivity’s table forms. The object of this study is BSE English textbooks for Junior High School. Those textbooks are officially published by Buku Pusat Perbukuan, Education and Culture Department of Indonesia. The findings revealed that there are six process types which are categorized into material process, mental process, relational process, behavioral process, verbal process and existential process. There are 832 frequencies of process types to male characters and 279 frequencies of process types to female characters in the narrative texts in BSE English textbooks. The material process occurs 555 times (49.95%). Relational process occurs 195 times (17.55%). Verbal process occurs 154 times (13.86%). Mental process occurs 164 times (14.76%). Existential process occurs 27 times (2.43%). Behavioral process occurs 16 times (2.43%). In participant functions the total score obtained by male characters is 1039. Meanwhile, female characters get 316. The result show that both process types and participant functions that the male characters is higher than female characters. Based on this score, it can be said that the male characters are represented as the more dominance than female characters.
