Abstract

In last few decades, mental health issues become a global concern, one of it is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Unfortunately, OCD is often misunderstood merely as cleanliness or perfectionism, but in realities it is a complex condition involving intrusive thoughts and compulsion behavior. This understanding demonstrate the need for accurate representation in media to build knowledge for society. Therefore, this research aims to examine the multimodal representation of OCD within the characters in the short film O.C.D. and investigate the stereotypes constructed through such depictions. A qualitative method was applied using Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The short film was chosen as the medium that conveys expression concisely and multimodal potential to portray psychological experiences through visual, verbal, and auditory modes. Analysis focused on the seven scenes of short film to examine how multimodal resources construct meaning. Data included dialogue transcripts, and selected scene screenshots of the short film. The findings show that OCD is portrayed as a complex psychological disorder rather than a simple behavioral trait. Through the integration of visual, verbal, and auditory modes, the film represents OCD as an invisible psychological burden characterized by recurring obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, emotional distress, and social disconnection. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the film produces a stereotype of OCD sufferers as individuals trapped in recurring cycles of obsession and compulsion. Accordingly, the result of this research suggest that short films can be used as effective learning materials to develop students’ multimodal and critical literacy. Besides that, this research demonstrates that multimodal representation could enhance audience understanding, foster empathy, and reduce stigma toward mental health disorders.
