Abstract

This study investigates the multimodal representation of emotions in the animated movie Inside Out 2 (2024), focusing on the characters Joy and Anxiety. The study aims to identify the types of metafunctions used in images to express emotions and to examine how verbal and visual modes interact in constructing emotional meanings. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design using Multimodal Discourse Analysis proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The data consisted of selected scenes featuring Joy and Anxiety, including screenshots and transcribed dialogues. The data were collected through documentation and observation techniques and analyzed using the Interactive Model of Miles et al. (2014) The result of this study revealed that all three metafunctions were used to represent emotions in the movie. The representational metafunction was realized through narrative and conceptual processes. The interactive metafunction through gaze, social distance, angle, and modality. The compositional metafunction through information value, salience, and framing. Furthermore, the study found that verbal and visual modes worked together to construct emotional meanings. While, visual elements in the scenes primarily conveyed emotional meanings, verbal mode through dialogue supporting the visual mode and reinforced the emotions represented visually.
