Abstract

Analyzing figurative language and Islamic spiritual meanings in Maher Zain’s songs is important because song lyrics are not only artistic but also convey deep spiritual messages. Figurative language helps express abstract ideas such as faith, love for the Prophet, and devotion to God more vividly and emotionally. However, most previous studies only focus on identifying types of figurative language without linking them to Islamic spiritual meanings. This study offers a new perspective by connecting both aspects. This study aims to (1) identify the types of figurative language in the songs The Chosen One, Peace Be Upon You, and Assalamu Alayka (English Version), (2) classify the Islamic spiritual meanings in the lyrics, and (3) analyze how figurative language expresses those meanings. This study used a qualitative descriptive research design to analyze figurative language and Islamic spiritual meanings in Maher Zain’s selected songs. The data source consisted of the lyrics of The Chosen One, Peace Be Upon Him, and Assalamu ‘Alaika taken from official Awakening Music platforms. The data were collected through documentation techniques and close reading to identify figurative language such as metaphor, symbolism, imagery, hyperbole, and personification. The data were analyzed using qualitative textual analysis through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Miles et al. (2014). To ensure the validity of the findings, investigator triangulation was conducted through validation by two supervising lecturers. The findings show that there are 5 figurative expressions found in the selected songs. Symbolism is the most dominant type, with 8 occurrences (29.63%), followed by metaphor and imagery, each with 7 occurrences (25.93%), hyperbole with 5 occurrences (18.52%), and personification with 2 occurrences (7.41%). Meanwhile, there are 6 classes of Islamic spiritual meaning, transcendental meaning, and prophetic-devotional meaning become the most dominant spiritual meanings, each appearing 6 times (26.1%). Ethical-moral meaning appears 4 times (17.4%), inner-existential meaning and transformative meaning each appear 3 times (13.0%), while aesthetic-emotional meaning appears 1 time (4.3%). The study concludes that figurative language in Maher Zain’s songs plays an important role in expressing Islamic spiritual meanings. Through metaphor, symbolism, imagery, hyperbole, and personification, the songs convey messages of faith, devotion to Allah, love for Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), moral reflection, and spiritual transformation. The analysis shows that figurative language helps communicate spiritual values in a poetic and meaningful way, making the songs both artistic and spiritually impactful.
