Abstract
Writing requires students to organize ideas, develop content, and use appropriate language features effectively. However, many high school students still face difficulties in various aspects of writing, including organization, content, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. These challenges are frequently found in writing procedure texts, which demand clear and systematic instructions. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties faced by tenth-grade students of SMAN 1 Prambon in writing procedure texts based on five aspects of writing: organization, content, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design using content analysis. The subjects of the study were 36 students of class X-2 at SMAN 1 Prambon. The data were collected through document analysis and interviews. Students’ procedure text writing worksheets were analyzed to identify their writing difficulties, while interviews were conducted to obtain deeper information regarding the factors contributing to those difficulties. The data were analyzed through familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing the findings. To ensure the validity of the data, technique triangulation and investigator triangulation were applied. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in all five aspects of writing. Grammar was identified as the most dominant difficulty, particularly in the use of verb forms, imperative sentences, tenses, and sentence structure. Students also encountered difficulties in selecting appropriate vocabulary, developing content, organizing ideas systematically, and applying writing mechanics accurately. Furthermore, the interview results indicated that limited vocabulary mastery, insufficient grammatical knowledge, difficulty generating ideas, and lack of writing practice were the main factors contributing to these difficulties. In conclusion, tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Prambon experienced various difficulties in writing procedure texts, particularly in grammar and vocabulary. These findings suggest the importance of improving students’ grammatical competence, vocabulary mastery, and writing practice to enhance their writing performance.
