Abstract
This study investigated the learning values reflected in the main characters of Avatar: The Way of Water and theirapplication in English language learning. The objectives of the study were to identify the learning values reflected in the main characters, analyze how these values were expressed through dialogues and actions, and explore their application in English language learning. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design using qualitative content analysis. The data were collected from the dialogues, actions, and significant scenes in the film and analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed six major learning values reflected in the main characters, namely responsibility, courage, empathy, cooperation, leadership, and respect. Among these values, responsibility emerged as the most prominent learning value, primarily reflected through Jake Sully’s commitment to protecting, guiding, and prioritizing the welfare of his family. This value appeared consistently throughout the film and was represented through both dialogues and actions. In addition, courage and cooperation were also strongly reflected, particularly through Lo’ak’s willingness to face risks and the collaborative efforts between the Sully family and the Metkayina clan. The study further found that learning values were expressed through both verbal and non-verbal representations, with character actions providing stronger evidence than dialogues. Furthermore, the identified values can be integrated into English language learning through classroom activities such as group discussions, role-plays, reflective writing, collaborative projects, presentations, and intercultural learning tasks. In conclusion, Avatar2 : The Way of Water contains meaningful learning values that can support character education and English language learning. Therefore, the film can be utilized as an authentic learning resource to promote language proficiency and positive character development.
