Abstract
Speaking is a productive skill in oral communication that students must master. However, many students have not yet mastered English because they experience difficulties, lack confidence, and feel awkward when asked to speak in class. They also feel shy and afraid of making mistakes when speaking in public. This study aims to investigate wheter there is a significant difference between in the speaking ability of grade VIII students taught by using the fondi application compared to the picture series. The novelty of this study was comparing the digital avatar-based environment of the Fondi app with the digital picture series environment. The study highlights how the anonymity of avatars effectively reduces students’ anxiety about speaking. The Fondi app serves as a virtual and interactive platform equipped with avatars that users from various countries can select. This app facilitated users in building their confident and less anxious when speaking by utilizing the avatar feature. This study is a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental approach. The population consists of eighth-grade students at MTsN 2 Kanigoro in the 2025/2026. The sample of this research was Class A (31 students) as the experimental class, which use fondi as the treatment, and Class D (34 students) as the control class, where students taught using a picture series, which was selected to compare because it has proven effective in improving speaking skills and teachers used it as a teaching media. The instruments used in this study are tests, namely pre-tests and post-tests, as research tools to collect data. The data in this study were analyzed using ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance). The results of this study indicate that the use of the Fondi app is more effective on speaking ability compared to a picture series. The mean pre-test score of experimental class was 42.55 while control class was 38.59. The mean post-test of experimental class was 67.65 while control class was 39.85. Based on the final results, there is a significant difference in speaking ability between eighth-grade students taught using the Fondi app and those taught using a picture series. The ANCOVA analysis showed a significance value (p) of 0.00 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of null hypothesis (H0) and the acceptation of alternative hypothesis (Ha). The calculation of the effect size (.804) confirmed that students taught using the Fondi app were higher than those taught using picture series. Furthermore, the Fondi app proved effective on speaking ability and making the learning process more engaging and enjoyable. This made it easier and more enjoyable for students to practice.
