Abstract
Writing is a fundamental skill in English language. However, many students still face challenges in mastering this skill. Therefore, the implementation of appropriate instructional strategies is important to create a more engaging and productive learning process. One possible solution to this problem is the implementation of the Draw Label Caption (DLC) Strategy. This strategy guides students to make a sketch then label for the sketch, after that compose captions then enabling them to develop descriptive text in a more organized and systematic manner. The research objective is to investigate the effectiveness of using draw Label Caption (DLC) strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The sample of this study consisted of seventh grade students at MTsN 2 Kediri in the 2025/2026 academic year. The experimental class consisted 32 students, while the control class consisted 34 students. The experimental class was taught using the Draw Label Caption (DLC) Strategy, while the control class was taught using the Teacher Modelling Strategy. The data were analyzed using SPPS version 25. The result of this study revealed a significant difference in writing performance between the experimental and control classes. The mean pre-test score of the experimental class was 51.00, whereas the control class was 45.09. Meanwhile, the post-test score in the experimental group was 83.19, whereas in the control class was 68.62. The findings indicate that the experimental class achieved better writing performance based on the writing assessment rubric. Furthermore, the ANCOVA analysis showed a significance value (p) of 0.00 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). In addition, the effect size analysis indicated a large effect (Partial Eta Squared = .460), demonstrating that the Draw Label Caption (DLC) strategy exerts a considerable influence on students’ writing performance. Consequently, it can be concluded that the Draw Label Caption (DLC) strategy is effective in teaching writing descriptive text to seventh grade students at MTsN 2 Kediri.
