Abstract

Reading comprehension remains a significant challenge for Indonesian junior high school students, particularly in understanding recount texts. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy in improving eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of recount texts. A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest was employed. The sample consisted of 64 students from two intact classes (Class VIII-A as the experimental group and Class VIII-C as the control group). The experimental group received DRTA treatment, while the control group used conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test (25 multiple-choice items) and analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS version 27. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group. The mean score increased from 74.37 (pre-test) to 91.50 (post-test), compared to the control group’s increase from 72.62 to 84.50. The ANCOVA test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that DRTA was statistically more effective than conventional teaching. Keywords: DRTA, reading comprehension, recount text, quasi-experimental, EFL
