Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effectiveness of the Telling Story teaching method in improving the English-speaking skills of tenth-grade vocational students at SMK Cahaya Surya Kediri during the 2024/2025 academic year. Grounded in Bruner’s Narrative Theory, the study employed a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental group taught through storytelling based on students’ personal experiences and a control group taught using conventional methods. Students’ speaking performance, including fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension, was assessed through pre-tests and post-tests using scoring rubrics adapted from Hughes (2003) and Luoma (2004). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The findings revealed that although both groups improved, the experimental group achieved significantly higher post-test scores than the control group. ANCOVA results confirmed a statistically significant effect of the Telling Story method on students’ speaking achievement (F(1, 51) = 49.158, p < .001), indicating that storytelling based on narrative experiences is an effective instructional strategy for enhancing vocational students’ English-speaking skills.
