Abstract

Writing is an essential skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. However, many students still face difficulties in generating ideas, organizing arguments, and applying appropriate language features in analytical exposition writing. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether there was a significant difference in students’ writing skills between those taught using Mentimeter and those taught using PowerPoint. A quasi-experimental design featuring a non-equivalent control group was employed in this study. A total of 64 tenth-grade students from the Hospitality and Tourism department at SMKN 2 Kota Kediri took part as research participants. The students were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Mentimeter was used as the learning medium in the experimental group, while PowerPoint was used in the control group. Data were gathered through pre-test and post-test writing assessments and subsequently analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The findings showed that both groups experienced improvement in their writing scores; however, the experimental group demonstrated higher achievement. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 53.13 to 65.63, whereas the control group improved from 52.03 to 60.94. Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significance value of 0.021, which was lower than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The effect size analysis also indicated a small effect of Mentimeter on students’ writing achievement. In conclusion, Mentimeter is effective in enhancing students’ writing skills, even though the effect size is considered small. It can serve as an alternative learning medium to create a more interactive and engaging classroom environment. Therefore, teachers are recommended to integrate Mentimeter into their teaching practices.
